On the real, I've been to like 5 shows in the last couple weeks, with two more next week, and it just doesn't get old.

I was lucky enough to score free tickets to the 30 Seconds To Mars show on Wednesday, which was brilliant, and last night I also landed freebies to see Mr Richard Ashcroft and his new band, United Nations of Sound, live at Palace in Melbourne.

I've only been a Verve fan for the past couple years (serious #latepass, I know), but in that short time, 'The Drugs Don't Work' and 'Sonnet' became two of my favourite songs of all time. His new project, entirely produced by No ID, is brilliant, and it translated amazingly well live. Even though dude looks like a heroin addict, he put on a brilliant show, and the band were tight as hell.

Dude even managed to bang out some old Verve classics, knocking out 'Bittersweet Symphony' with the band about mid-way through (a song he rarely plays), and acoustic versions of 'The Drugs Don't Work' and 'Sonnet' during the encore. Goosebumps, yo.

The above track is one of my faves off the new album too.

DAREDEVIL “BORN AGAIN”

I had a conversation earlier with my boy Danimal ( whut up Playboy ) about the DVD series that DC comics have been releasing. At the end of the convo I stated how despite my tremendous respect for DC comics ( Batman is that DUDE ) , I’m always gonna be a Marvel. I wrote about Frank Miller in my last post for his work on “The dark Knight returns” ( shame on you if you haven’t experienced it yet ) because that is, simply put, the greatest graphic novel of all time to me……..even though I’m still a Marvel. My second favorite is another Frank Miller masterpiece. One he did for the house that Stan Lee built.

Daredevil was never a favorite of mine growing up. The stories just seemed too adult to my still developing young mind. If you told me my second favorite graphic novel would be a Daredevil story when I was a kid I would have looked at you like you were stupid ( I probably would have looked at you that way even if you told me something else, I was a real asshole as a kid ) TDKR had already introduced me to the concept of comics being more than just kid stuff, but Daredevil still didn’t grab me. I owned like one Daredevil comic growing up and I didn’t bother to catch the movie in theaters. About a year and a half ago I was online reading up on Frank Millers work to see what I hadn’t read yet and people kept on bringing up “Born Again” So I grabbed a copy and sat back. As I read it I caught the exact same feeling I had when I heard “Method man” for the first time. Which was “What the FUCK?!? This is incredible”

Maturity is a cool thing because it brings a whole new level of appreciation for certain things you just wouldn’t give too much of a fuck about as a kid. Daredevil seems to have always been intended for more older readers ( the character spends as much time working as a lawyer as he does kicking ass ) but when you mature and read it, it makes you feel like a kid again. The plot for “Born Again” revolves around Daredevil ( Matt Murdock ) being sold out by his ex girl Karen Page. Karen is a drug addicted, adult film star who sells Matt’s identity to a drug dealer for a fix. The info gets back to New York City’s top crime lord The Kingpin who has had beef with Daredevil for a long time. The villain discovering the hero’s identity thing has been done before but it usually turns into the villain fighting the hero at home rather than on the streets. What hit me about this is HOW the Kingpin attacks Murdock. He gets him disbarred, cleans out his bank accounts, strategically drives him mad from paranoia, turns him against his closet friends, THEN blows up his apartment. I’ve seen Superman get beaten to death by Doomsday, I’ve seen the Joker viciously murder Robin and his mother, hell, I’ve seen Magneto rip the skeleton out of Wolverine. None of them compared to what Kingpin put Daredevil through. Reading the story, I was like “DAMN!!!”

The art by David Mazzucchelli is very well done. Serving the story perfectly. I don’t find the artwork as mind blowing as works by Todd McFarlane, Norm Breyfogle or the almighty Jim Lee but it compliments the story better than I think even their fantastic talent could. The same way that the sound of “36 chambers” was nowhere near as polished as “The Chronic” but it was the PERFECT medium for the WU to do their thing on.

The magic in this is in the writing. Frank Miller outdid himself with the dialogue, both internal and between characters. If there ever was a comic that played out like a compelling movie, this is it. In one scene a man is murdered while a reporter listen’s in over the phone and the way the scene is set up and written is THE most nerve wracking moment in my comic reading history. The story is so good that I didn’t even notice that Daredevil was barely in costume for the entire duration. This is not a traditional superhero story. Rather than being amazed at feats of superhuman strength the most amazing thing in this is the triumph of the human spirit in the face of crushing adversity.

I recommend this book to anyone going through a hard time in life as it will make you wanna face your tormentor head on a punch him dead in the teeth, even if you don’t have a costume for fighting crime.

Rozay isn't the greatest artist. Yeah he's got some cool shit, but as an MC he's nothing special. That said, I don't really get all the hype leading up to his latest LP, 'Teflon Don', but this leak caught my attention, both for the title and the feature artist.

As much as Jay is slippin' these days, I HAD to hear what he had to say on a joint titled 'Free Mason', particularly after all the talk online about Jay's inclinations towards being part of the Illuminati (something I'm yet to make up my mind on). Oh and John Legend makes a DOPE cameo too.

I actually really like Jay's verse here. He addresses the rumours briefly here ('Bitch I said that I'm amazing, not a mason'), but I think I need to hear it a few more times. What y'all think?

Hectic Friday (Oscar Grant, Lebron and Rainbows)

Today there was so much shit going on that I thought it'd be simpler to wrap it all up in one special Hectic Friday post.

First up, the decision on the recent Oscar Grant murder trial was made today. Long story short, a white policeman shot a young black man point blank in front of a crowd at an Oakland BART station, and the cop got off on a couple years for 'involuntary manslaughter'. This case had serious race overtones, hence the uproar.

The worst part was that it happened on the same day as the Lebron announcement (see below) so half my Twitter feed was about a cop getting off for murdering a human, and the other was about an athlete deciding where to earn his billionth dollar.

And this Lebron shit has been wild. I'm not even really a huge sports fan but it was all over Twitter today so I couldn't avoid it.

My two cents: Players leave teams and get traded EVERY FUCKING YEAR. Yeah, the Cavs lost Lebron, but so what? Shit happens. Mike retired, too. Get over it. Good on him.

That said, majority owner Dan Gilbert wrote a scathing public letter about Lebron's decision, saying such sore loser bullshit like "I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE" and "You can take it to the bank." Wow. What a tool.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but since I got into this rock/indie shit heavy, it's uber wicked coz I have no pretensions or prejudices about the artist or the music. So when I first put 30 Seconds To Mars on the iPod in the gym, I lost my SHIT. Their 'A Beautiful Lie' album blew my mind. And although I didn't enjoy their last two albums as much, they're still dope. Then dudes bagged em for the singer, Jared Leto, who apparently is an actor and the blonde dude who gets murked in Fight Club.

But fuck 'em.

These are my two fave joints; 'Valhalla' is by far my fave 30 Seconds joint, and it's just a b-side for some stupid reason, while the title track off their debut is heatrocks. Can't wait to see 'em live. Enjoy.

What Cee be on... City and Colour

I'm ALL about this dude right now (pause). After being put onto City & Colour earlier this year, I'd been a casual fan. My interest grew after discovering that Canadian Dallas Green, who essentially is City & Colour (based off his name - Dallas, City. Green, Colour. Genius), is also the singer for hardcore group Alexisonfire.

I found that even though I'm currently in possession of more music than I can cope with, I kept going back to City & Colour; the warm, heartfelt and often dark songs just resonated with me. Then this weekend I learned a bunch of the songs on guitar and now I'm officially obsessed. I even ordered a tshirt from their website.

Anyway, check the videos for two of my favourite City & Colour songs. The first is 'Coming Home', from his debut 'Somtimes', and the second is 'Sleeping Sickness' from the 'Bring Me Your Love' album. Enjoy.

This gig was our first live set in over a year, so it was a solid return to the stage for the whole Fam, and we decided to record it; and I'm really glad we did. We're truly happy with this project, expertly EQ'd by Notion, as it's a great reflection of where we're at musically right now, plus it's extra poignant as myself, Bekah and Notion are about to shoot off to Canada so this line up may not happen for a while after our goodbye gig.

Oh we back! Our model grind has been a bit more vicious of late, as we gear up for the re-launch of TheMovementFam.com with a brand new layout, artist pages, and all that good stuff.

So as per how most of my model discoveries happen, I was trawling Facebook at work (it's kinda part of my job lol) and I stumbled upon one of the loveliest young ladies I've seen in a while, Miss Shushila Takao. Tokyo's Movie Reviews: SNATCH

SNATCH

There are certain things I miss about England. Sausage rolls, Notting Hill carnival, Walking around London, the clubs etc. One of the things I miss the most is the people. Not the snooty rude muthafuckas, but the normal working class, everyday people. It was such a diverse mix of individuals that it was crazy. The ravers, cool kids, hip hop heads, football hooligans, pub crawlers, smart kids, FLY chicks (a fit bird with British accent is still the biggest turn on for me), West Indians, Pakistani’s etc It was a fucking crazy melting pot of Neighborhoods and little worlds within itself. When I was over there I would get so caught up in life that I would never sightsee. Running the streets at night with my cousins was fun, dangerous and ALWAYS interesting. The spots and lives there were breeding grounds for crazy stories.

I said all that to say this. Those same people I spoke about were dramatized perfectly for this movie. Guy Ritchie dug up the best of England’s worst and polished them up for the screen in this movie. Although the story spans 3 different countries. The heart of the story is in merry old England. The characters in the story are memorable as hell. I cant say the word “Bonjour” without picturing Bullet tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) slamming some dues head in the car door while some 80’s pop plays in the background. Sol, Brick top, Mickey (man this was the moment I realized the Brad Pitt was a fucking ILL actor) and of course Turkish (Jason Statham). All the characters, apart from their various personality quirks, stuck out for one strong reason: DIALOGUE. Man listen, Everybody in this movie was coming out their face in style. Few movies have had me laughing my ass off as much as this. If you’re a rapper, this is a flick your gonna love cause it makes you wanna step your pen game up. Trust me. The “Desert Eagle POINT five o” speech alone is worth the price of admission.

The other part of the equation is the sequencing. The way certain things are hidden from plain sight adds another layer of humor to the scenes they are used for. Scenes also cut in and out in ways that when pieced together play like a classic episode of “Seinfeld”. The technique of one character setting off a chain of events that affect everybody in the film is used to perfection here (when you see the milk scene you’ll know what I mean). Guy Ritchie really pieced together a well though out gem. Stuff like the “I’m coming to London” section had me like “DAMN!!! Dude wasn’t playing”. I feel it was Tarantino influenced in certain bits but what the hell Tarantino himself was influenced by others so it’s just the natural cycle of creation. Guy Ritchie really put his stamp on this movie and consolidated his own crime flick sub genre style. Previously seen on his other masterpiece, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”.

Even if anyone say’s that the movie didn’t “innovate” the gangster genre, you cant tell me it’s not entertaining. This is one of those movies I’ve watched dozens of times and it never get’s old. Seriously. A couple of months back they showed this “Snatch” every other day on cable. I always caught it when ever I saw it was on. It’s like “The Infamous” by Mobb Deep. You pop it in wanting to hear like 2 songs but you always wind up listening to the whole thing. Truly a classic.

So now, tell me one thing...”Do you know what "nemesis" means?”

A certain Mr Mathers used the exact same beat and hook for his most recent album, 'Recovery' (my fave song on the album). How did this happen? I have zero concrete facts, but as we all know, YouTube comments might as well be bond, so check the details...

A batch of beats were sent to Cinque from Khalil through a mutual friend (No ID) as a favor and Cinque happened to use the track w/ no intention of marketing it or making profit from it, just to further build an online presence and work on a project. I love Mark Ronson. Dude has been extremely consistent over the years, involved with incredible albums from Amy Winehouse, Daniel Merriweather, Adele and of course his own opuses.

So this new joint, 'Bang Bang Bang', is on some left field shit. It's like some 80s synth pop; a total 180 from his previous work. For me, it just doesn't really work. Q-Tip makes an appearance, which is cool, but I much prefer Ronson on his soul shit. I guess that sorta stuff doesn't really sell (Merriweather's album was criminally ignored outside of the UK), so I guess he has to roll with the trends. Check it out anyway.

I am absolutely loving Aussie rock right now. So many brilliant bands coming out of this country, it's mad impressive, particularly for someone like myself who has only recently gotten into the scene.

So I went and caught British India at the Corner Hotel last night, the first of two shows for the launch of their latest album, Avalanche. Openers City Riots, hailing from Adelaide, were really great, however this was the first show I've ever seen people too scared to be up front for. Really strange considering how solid their music was.

Big Scary were up next, a two piece (male singer/guitarist/keys, female drummer) who made a shitload of noise. Awesome stuff.

There was a solid gap between Big Scary and British India, and the mob was getting restless. I'd never been to a gig like this before, so me and my mate were right up front ready to go. Chants of 'Bri-tish, Bri-tish!' were hollered from the gaping mouths of the beer-swilling suburban hooligans, and this should have indicated what was to come.

Fuck I was shocked. I'd heard of 'slam pits' before but fuck me, up close, shit is hectic. If this happened at a Hip Hop gig, full scale riots would break out and it'd get mighty messy. But not here. The sweaty meatheads were happy to throw each other around as hard as they could, with damn near everyone around me screaming the words to every song. I was entranced; until some short ass broad knocked my camera out of my hand, which was duly stomped upon and the lens knocked firmly out of place.

That kinda ruined it for me, but I tried to put it out of my mind and enjoy the rest of the show. The boys were intense the whole time, the crowd loved it, so much energy. I really learned a lot about stage presentation from these fellas. I'd love to go again, but next time I'll stay far back from said pit of slam.

Y'all might know that I been on Mr Lidell's nuts for a hot minute. Dude put on a killer show in Melbourne a few months back, and his latest album, 'Compass', is a gem.

So I didn't realise that he already dropped two music videos from the album. The first one, The Ring, is a bit of a strange one, with dude writhing around on the beach making all sorts of faces.

Next, 'I Wanna Be Your Telephone', is much more straight down the line, for such a weird song.

I also threw in the video for 'Another Day' from his last album, 'Jim', as I'd never seen it before and it's an amazing song.

So we all know Drake is a fan of blowing things out of proportion. Nicki Minaj's skills (oh check out Lil Kim's Twitter page, she goes IN on Nicki, Puffy and Drake), Jay dropping his 'greatest verse ever' on their collab 'Light Up'...and now it's the incarcerated Lil Wayne who apparently dropped his 'greatest verse ever' over the phone from Rikers Island to the same 'Light Up' joint. 360 - 'Take Off (Sky Is Falling)' (sneak preview)

The Australian readers will be familiar with Matthew Colwell, aka 360, from his eclectic mixtape appearances, his esteemed battle career and his work with Pez as Forthwrite.

So dude dropped his debut album, 'What You See Is What You Get', a couple years back, and he's about to hit us with his sophomore effort 'Falling And Flying'. This time around, though, he's not only backed by label Soulmate Records but by major EMI, so it'll be interesting to see how this one goes.

Check out the first single, 'Take Off (Sky Is Falling)'. The entire album is produced by Styalz Fuego, and the sound is hella varied from what I'm told. This joint is on that electro vibe, and I dig it. Listened a couple times, finding it a bit hard to get into but after a few more listens I have a feeling it'll click. I don't see any other artists in Australia being this forward thinking in the Hip Hop scene, so I'm keen on checking out the LP. Get it up ya.

So I think I might be a bit late on these cats, but Miike Snow are the shit. Quality indie/rock/eletronica. Their self titled debut is brilliant, and already been on heavy rotation for the past few days since copping it.

Check the video above for 'The Rabbit', which is a new single and not actually off their album. Shit is hilarious. It's got what every video needs: kids with beards, half naked dancing broads and a solid tribute to 2 Live Crew. Awesomeness.

Normally any piss-take of Hip Hop makes me cringe. I fucking hate it, always have. I guess as a Caucasian dude from Australia, I kinda copped it growing up for my love of the culture (yup, I need a tissue), so I'm a tad sensitive to this type of shit.

The Rapping Weatherman, however, entertained the hell outta me. Dude spits a 2 minute verse over Young Money's 'Roger That' beat for the Austin, TX local Fox station. Can't front - it's corny yet clever, and it's clear they're taking the piss outta themselves too. Word to his 'posse' and getting the news anchors involved too. Gold.

John Mayer - Half Of My Heart (video)

Y'all should know by now that Mr. Mayer is possibly one of my favourite artists of all time. Yeah, the dude needs to shut his mouth from time to time, but on a musical level, his brand of acoustic pop/rock is fucking flawless. Managed to catch the dude live on his recent Australian tour and he was even better than the last time I saw him.

Anyway, I'll just get off his dick for second to tell y'all about the new video for his third single off 'Battle Studies', 'Half Of My Heart'. This joint features Miss Taylor Swift on two lines just shy of the 3 minute mark, not earning even earning her a visit to the video set. And rightfully so, silly broad she is. Cool video, not my fave song off the album ('Assassin' and 'Perfectly Lonely' are goddamn masterpieces), but should bode well. Carry on.

Ageism in Hip Hop?

Before I even get started on my rant, check the video below of Havoc from Mobb Deep's thoughts on rappers getting their first break in their 30's.

Alright. Coming from Havoc, a respected MC/producer who dropped his first album at 16 (with Prodigy, Mobb Deep's 'Juvenile Hell'), this is an interesting point. Who the fuck says that the point of view of a 16 year old is more valid than that of a 30 year old?

Let me put this in perspective. I'm now 29, and I've been rapping since I was 15, but only taking it seriously since I was like 23 or 24, and really seriously since maybe 27. Now, if I had have had a 'break' when I was 23, I know for a fact that there is NO WAY that my music back then would be anywhere near as solid as it is now.

I've learned so much over the past few years that I finally feel I'm ready to deliver a solid product that is worth people investing their time and money into. But my worldly (or not so worldly) point of view as a 23 year old, according to Havoc, is more valuable than the me of today?

That argument makes no fucking sense. So yes, fuck you Havoc. Just because shit hasn't come together for someone by the time they're 30 - whether they're an MC or in a band - doesn't mean that they should automatically kill their dreams. That's insane. It's nothing short of ageism, which is one of the most ridiculous biases in the modern era, as it puts the youth on a pedestal over experience and wisdom.

I'd be keen to hear your thoughts on this, folks...

It's late night Friday and I thought I'd share my pain. I work for a film distributor and got to check out the flick last week at a work screening, part of the job. All good. Then I got offered premiere tickets. So I took it due to the jealousy factor from broads, plus the free piss.

However, my boss and Ryan from YouTube took us out at 4pm for beers at Bridie O'Reilley's and got me fucking smashed before hitting the premiere, which was awesome, but then I damn near fell asleep. It was worse the second time around.

Anyway, I'm home, I'm drunk as hell still, and tired as shit. And this is about as interesting as I'ma get right now. Night folks.
